On January 1, 2017, new state laws took effect that creates new opportunities for accessory dwelling units (also known as ADUs, “garage conversion” or “housing units”). An ADU is a dwelling unit with a living space, full kitchen, and bathroom, which is an accessory use to a primary or main single-family residence.
To construct, accessory dwelling units typically cost less than other types of housing, largely because they do not necessitate paying for land or purchasing major new infrastructure. As a form of infill development, Second Units provides more living space for family members, students, elderly, in-home health care providers, the disabled, and in laws units at below-market prices within existing neighborhoods.
